想询问美国首任教育部部长讲的这段话：
The role of the teacher remains the highest calling of a free people.
To the teacher, America entrusts her most precious resource, her children; and asks that they be prepared... to face the rigors of individual participation in a democratic society.
我的初步理解是：
老师的角色仍是自由人民至高无上的呼召。对于老师来说，美国将其最宝贵的资源—孩子—交给他们；并要求他们做好准备…以面对个人参与民主社会的严酷。
问题点：
1.请问除了呼召（有点宗教意味），the highest calling 还有没有更好的说法呢？
2.第二段的and ask that they…请问这里的they是指老师或孩子呢？

一个传统的英文文法规则是代名词是代(之前)最近的名词(*1)(所以你问的they是指children)，所以这其实没有模糊性(*1) 美国高中生考的SAT有过这例子。一个高中英文老师对一题英文考题提出质疑，他的依据就是这条文法规则，而the College Board也接受了，将答案改成那题考的代名词应该是代替之前最近的名词(原本答案不是)

calling这边的意思是职业吧，vocation or profession

vocation profession 本意上也是有宗教意涵的
