有人问“最大公约数”英文怎么说?
中文常用“最大公约数”比喻“最多数人可接受的(条件/方式…)”，如:“xxx仍是党内
派系可接受的最大公约数”，“... 政治最大公约数，…是多数党和少数党两方都不满意
，但都可以接受的。”
在数学上，公约数(common divisor)是可共同整除其他整数 (integer) 的约数
(factors)，如：1, 2, 3, 6都可同时整除12，18，30，而6为其最大公约数 (greatest
common divisor或Highest Common Factor)。
那么要英译“解决问题的最大公约数”，可说 *"Is there the greatest common
divisor?" 或 "greatest common divisor for the problem"吗?
找不到 "Is there the greatest common divisor" 的结果。(Google, Sept 30, 16)
找不到 "greatest common divisor for the problem" 的结果。
为何不行? 因为英文在这种譬喻 (metaphorical expression) 情境下会说 “a common
denominator”，如:
“Is there a common denominator … to prevent this from happening?”
“So I ask: is there something we can agree on … a common denominator that
we can get behind that unites us and allows us to finally bring our potential
...”
“These groups differed considerably but they found a common denominator in
the struggle against the Communist government.”
"they found a common denominator" 约有 135,000 项结果
"Is there a common denominator that"约有 19,400 项结果
有人会说common denominator数学上是“公分母”啊! 可是英文在说“最多数人可接受的
(条件…)”习惯就是这么比喻，就好像中文“鸡皮疙瘩”，英文却叫goosebumps。这类中
英语言与文化差异是翻译上诸多困难点之一，有待大家共同努力。 (Jerome Su, Sept
