Heavy-hitter “Cannon” Chen Jing-Fung’s 2-year contract with the Lamigos
terminates at the end of this year. Both sides will engage in contract
negotiations by December, with the Lamigos management looking forward to
keeping him on their roster.
Since his addition in 2006, Chen has signed 3 multi-year contracts (3, 2, and
2-year contracts, respectively). Yesterday at a Asia Series warm-up games
with Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions, the crowded roared in raving support as he
stepped up on the home plate as designated hitter, hitting a base-hit in the
9th inning.
Lamigo General Manager Liu supported Chen, saying that Cannon Chen is the
benchmark for the team, and hopes to see him play the remainder of his career
until retirement. Hopefully, he can become head coach but that is all up to
Chen to decide.
Cannon Chen has always maintained his body in good shape and admits his
desire to continue serving the Lamigo for as long as he can play. Whether the
team decides to hand him a long-term or short-term contact, he will keep
playing.
Former MBL pitcher Hideo Nomo showed up at Taiwan-Japanese Classic Series
game and was present at Taoyuan Baseball Park yesterday. Since it was his
private schedule, he was not open to interviews or other forms of media. He
did chat a bit with Cannon Chen, leaving a classic image for baseball
aficionados to remember.
