: Daion(Dayan)

From the above discussion we can draw the conclusion that the Mongols at that
time regarded Da Yuan and Yeke Mongγol Ulus as the same, both of which, of
course, denote not just the realm of Qubilai but the entire Mongol Empire.
Obviously the Mongol name of the empire was phonetically too long to be
transcribed into Chinese adequately, so they introduced at first Da Menggu
Guo, which faithfully rendered its meaning; however, since it is made of four
characters, which was quite unprecedented, they changed it into Da Chao, "the
Great Dyansty." It had two characters but still conveyed the essence of the
original meaning. Then, in 1272, Qubilai, at the recommendation of Liu
Bingzhong, adopted a more elegant expression, Da Yuan.
