请问，上面两道题目，虽然正确答案都是 instead of
是否使用 rather than 也是可以的？
如果都可以，究竟那个比较符合"native"英语使用者的习惯？
目前看到的大部分例句中，似乎当句子为过去式时，用 rather than 是没问题的
但网络上仍有一些例句，即使是现在式，也一样用 rather than + Ving
惟网络的例句不见得可靠正确，只能说在平常的使用情况
rather than + Ving 似乎近乎等同于 instead of + Ving
从意思上解读，rather than 含有偏好 (preference) 的意味
相对地，instead of 则是一种替代 (replacement)

根据上述的细微差异做区分，是否真的合乎英语使用者的习惯？
我感觉老外应该不会想这么多吧？
如果从含义上分辨，上面两个题目用 rather than 会比较好吗？(先不管文法问题)
第一题句尾，还有 even 一字出现，更加强调主词 young people 做 travel ...
是一种“刻意的”选择，而不是仅仅一种替换而已。
用中文表示，是“宁可...也不想...”
第二题因为少了上下文，
倘若情境的叙述为一个男孩做错事了却拉不下脸向人认错，还反过来生气地瞪人
表示该男孩处在“宁可瞪人，也不道歉”的纠结心态，如果是这种情境，
用 rather than + Ving 会比较好吗？
要什么样的情境用 instead of + Ving 会比较合适？

第一题我会觉得都行耶（准备被打脸…）然后你说的从意思上解读那段，我很赞成。问题是，我还是会觉得两个都可以…instead of有种暗示“其实他做别的选择比较好”，rather than比较没有价值判断，都可以。我的理解是这样。

我猜出题老师应该是把than解读为对等连接词，所以如果这题要选rather than的话，后面要改成"(to) have children"或"(to) start a family"以对应前面的"to travel"。殊不知rather than也可视为一整组介系词词组表“而不是”，与instead of相当……
