Forks trace their origins back to the ancient Greeks. Forks at that time were
fairly large with two tines that aided in the carving of meat in the kitchen.
The tines prevented meat from twisting or moving during carving and allowed
food to slide off more easily than it would with a knife.

slide off http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/slide_off这词组的意象是让一个斜面滑落,而后面也说了“跟刀子一起使用时slide off会比较容易”,可以用你理解的方式啊

古早以前只有刀没有叉,洋人吃东西都是用刀切了,直接插下去送进嘴里所以这里会说拿叉子叉食物,跟刀子相比,比较容易弄下来
