It is ... that 的句型,我们以往学到的主要是“强调”功能:
It is John that wrote those letters. 写那些信的人,正是John(强调“就是”他做
了这件事)。
当然,更不用说一般常见的 It is 形/名 + that 子句: It is great that you're
here. 你来了真好。
但另一个同句型的不同意思,就让很多人(包括母语人士)跌跤了:
It is ___ that ____. 有否定意味
著名的例子是莎士比亚在《威尼斯商人》里写的这句:
It is a wise father that knows his own child.
后来改为较通俗的字眼,变成篇头的那句谚语: It is a good father that knows his
son.
有人认为是 It takes a wise father to know his own child.

而这个解释,就接近朱生豪、梁实秋对此句的翻译:
只有聪明的父亲才会知道他自己的儿子。(朱译)
只有聪明的父亲才认识他自己的儿子呢。(梁译)
但更近代的汉译,则倾向认为此句型并非“只有....才”的意思,
而是语带否定地说,“再怎么....也不”。
例如以下几句:
It is a good workman that never blunders.
再好的工人,也会犯错(智者千虑,必有一失)。(出处)
It is a bold mouse that nestles in the cat's ear.
再勇敢的老鼠也不会在猫耳朵里安家。(做不必要的冒险,算不得真勇敢。)(出处1 出
