1. Considering Asia generally, or at least those economies we
have studied, how has international trade changed over the
last one hundred years? How have the things exported and
imported changed? How has trade policy changed? Briefly
discuss why these changes occurred.
2. Describe the roles Chinese and Japanese have played in
Southeast Asia's economic development. In what ways have
they contributed positively to Southeast Asia's economic
progress? In what ways have they played a nagative role?
3. In the 1950s, the Philippines were richer tham Indonesia, but
Indonesia's economy grew quicker than the Philippines and
now is widely considered a more successful economy than
the Philippines. Why do you think Indonesia has been more
successful than the Philippines? Are there any ways in which
you think the Philippines has been more successful than
Indonesia?
4. South Korea and India were both colonies before World War
II, but their colonial experiences were very different. How
did these differences affect their post-independence
economic development? Do you think India's relative
poverty today is mainly due to its experience under British
imperial rule, or do you think other factors are more
important? Explain.
5. Choose any economy we have studied and discuss how
geographic factors, such as position, climate and natural
resources, have influenced its economic development. What
geographical advantages has it had and how did it make use
of these advantages? What geographic problems has it faced
and how has it overcome or failed to overcome these
problems?
