NTU 2014 SPRING:"MAHLER AND VIENNESE MODERNISM"
Choose one topic to write on in ca. 1000 words (if you're unable to
participarte in the group presentation at term end, take two.) Be concise
and precise. Due 5/30
1. On Adorno 1960, "Mahler:Centenary Address":
"In the early works, [...] Mahler's basic elements are already to be found.
These include the 'way of the world' (Weltlauf) and breakthrough or
intrusion, the closeness to the vernacular and painful brokenness. But at
this stage they are just crudely juxtaposed to each other. {...} Mahler drew
the consequences from something that has only today become fully apparent:
that the Western idea of a unified, self-contained, and to some extend
systematic music, whose mergin into unity is meant to be identical with its
meaning, is no longer viable." (89-90, 92, translation revised)
Trace the development of one or two of Mahler's basic elements in his oeuvre,
e.g. Symphony no.1, Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen, and some later works.
What could it mean here and now?
2. On Botstein 1999, "Mahler's Vienna":
"The striking success of these writers and artists with the critics and the
public at the turn of the century generated a counter avant-grade, a
competing group of radical youngerwriters, artists, and musicians, many of
whom opposed the Secession and its allies." (33)
Evaluate one or two ideas of this radical group around Karl Kraus and Adolf
Loos. Clarify its critique and occasional support for Mahler.
3. On Carvell 2006, "Scale of Eternality: Mahler and the Autobiographical":
"They are concepts that seem to have resonance in my experience of Mahler.
Other associated, characteristic, and recurrent concepts in the
Investigations can be linked to the composer ..." (208).
Comment on one or two of the concepts that Cavell links up Mahler with
Wittgenstein. Illustrate this discussion with your own listening experience.
