Cuban: My worst move was letting Nash leave
FOX Sports Southwest NOV 7, 2014 1:33
Mark Cuban has had mostly success as the Dallas Mavericks' owner,
bringing a championship to the city in 2011.
But Cuban admits he's made mistakes and says letting point guard
Steve Nash go in free agency was his biggest.
"I learned an expensive lesson," Cuban told Rolling Stone. "It took too many
years to realize that for some GMs, their number-one job wasn't winning a
championship, it's keeping their job. It's easy to look back and see my
mistakes today. I wish I would have been smart enough to know better back
then. I loved taking risks to win. Unfortunately some of them were not as
educated as they should have been."
After Cuban and the Mavs let Nash go in 2004, Nash signed a six-year, $66
million contact with the Phoenix Suns and knocked his old team out of the
playoffs in the second round. Adding to the sting, Nash won back-to-back MVP
awards with the Suns in 2005 and 2006.
"I probably didn't do as good a job as I could have in putting teams around
Dirk (Nowitzki)," Cuban said. "But hindsight is always 20/20."
