Cardinals signed INF Matt Carpenter to a six-year, $52 million contract
extension.
The deal also includes an $18.5 million option for 2020. Derrick Goold of the
St. Louis Post Dispatch reported Friday that the team was close to the deal,
and confirmed the two sides reached an agreement early Saturday. It's a nice
reward for the 28-year-old who's coming off a brilliant 2013 season in which
he slashed .318/.392/.481 with 11 homers, 78 RBI, and a league-high 126 runs
scored. He'll be shifting to third base full-time in 2014 to make room for
Kolten Wong at second.
