Tsuyoshi Nishioka arrived Thursday, a few days following one of the largest
snowstorms in Twin Cities history, so he's seeing the town at its worst.
"I was so surprised by this cold weather because it was colder than I
expected," Nishioka told Japanese reporters outside Target Field on Friday,
according to an interpreter. "Even the stadium was covered by snow."
He eventually will get to see Minneapolis-St. Paul at its best, as Nishioka
and the Twins have agreed on a three-year contract worth $9.25 million.
Nishioka will be presented by the club during a news conference 4 p.m.
Saturday at the ballpark.
Nishioka will be paid $3 million per year. The deal includes a $4 million
option for 2014, or a $250,000 buyout.
Nishioka, 26, is expected to man the middle infield with Alexi Casilla and
experience a packed Target Field in much warmer weather as the Twins defend
their AL Central title in 2011.
"The Twins people showed me a DVD," he said. "I was so impressed by
everything such as the new and beautiful clubhouse. I am so honored and happy
to play here."
It's a historic signing for the Twins, who were one of four major league
teams to never have signed a player from the Japanese Leagues, along with the
Reds, Marlins and Diamondbacks.
Nishioka will be the 52nd Japanese-born player to play in the majors once he
takes the field for the Twins. A switch hitter, Nishioka led the league in
2010 with a .346 batting average for the Chiba Lotte Marines. He had 206
hits, becoming the first Pacific League player to have at least 200 hits in
Japan's 144-game season since Ichiro Suzuki in 2000.
The Twins sought to add speed to the lineup, and Nishioka, who stole 22 bases
this year, brings that element.
Indications are that he will play second base for the Twins, with Casilla
taking over at short. But manager Ron Gardenhire said last week during the
winter meetings that he wants to see Nishioka in spring training before
making a final decision.
Casilla
The Twins won the right to negotiate with Nishioka by submitting a high bid
of $5.3 million. The sides had until Dec. 26 to work out a deal, or Nishioka
would return to Chiba Lotte and the Twins' bid would be returned.
"Since the Twins won the posting, the negotiations have proceeded smoothly,"
Nishioka said. "I have no complaints, and will play 100 percent for the team.
I am looking forward to meeting [my] new teammates."
