ai on Tuesday, it marked the end of a drought for the franchise, which hadn’t s
igned an amateur free agent out of Asia in 12 years.

what we’re trying to do internationally. We’re trying to broaden our footprint

oing to be hopefully the first of many signings out of Taiwan, South Korea, Japa
n and all of Asia.”

South Korean infielder Hoy Jun Park had been the Yankees’ last Asian internatio
nal signing, all the way back in July 2014. Park’s most notable contribution to
the franchise came when he was part of a trade that landed then-reliever Clay H
olmes in pinstripes in 2021.

The Yankees and Lai agreed to a $872,000 signing bonus plus a college tuition st
ipend, a person familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymit
y because he wasn’t authorized to publicly discuss finances, told The Athletic.

Garza said the “groundwork” in attracting talent in Asia “starts years in adv
ance.” Garza took over as the Yankees’ international scouting director in Janu
ary after the organization didn’t renew the contract of longtime international
scouting leader Donny Rowland in October.

Matt Slater, a longtime baseball executive who recently took over the Yankees’
newly created role of global player acquisitions supervisor and who has worked e
xtensively in Asia, was an integral part of signing Lai, Garza said. Garza also
credited scout Peng Pu Lee for keeping tabs on Lai and the Yankees’ scouting an
d player development departments for weighing in on him.

The Yankees have high hopes for Lai, an 18-year-old righty whose “heavy” fastb
all has touched 95 mph and whose hallmarks are his “pitchability” and his “se
condary upside,” according to Garza.

“We think there’s upside in the body,” he said. “We really like the makeup.

him get through tough spots. We’ve seen him have really good outings. Really ju
st kind of grew on us.”

The scout added that Lai pitches with an “edge” and that he already speaks a f
air amount of English. Lai represented Taiwan at the 2025 U-18 Baseball World Cu
p, helping his club win a bronze medal. He appeared in three games, striking out
14 batters over seven innings of relief. He’s expected to start at the Yankees
’ academy in the Dominican Republic.

Lai is the third amateur free agent in Yankees history out of Taiwan, joining pi
tcher Chien-Ming Wang (2000) and infielder Fu-Lin Kuo (2009). Twenty-one players
from Asia have appeared in the majors in 2026, including 14 from Japan, five fr
om South Korea and two from Taiwan, according to Baseball Almanac.

him.”
