All this music is, of course, functional: it is not really meant to be
listened to, only to be heard. But there are also kinds of functional music
whose effectiveness depends in part on the existence of a listening audience.
Music for a religious service, whether it tries to be purely liturgical,
historically evocative, or directly expressive, depends for its effect
on the attentiveness of the congregation. And even though the organ prelude
has begun before most of us arrive, just as the postlude goes on after
we leave, what we do worldly activities and the service to come, while
the other should send us away with some bit of Heaven still lying about us.
