Electric GT, an all-Tesla and all-electric racing championship, recently
announced that they will use the Tesla Model S P100D instead of the Model
S P85+ for their race car. They unveiled their modified version at the
annual Autosport International Show in Birmingham today and claimed some
impressing new specs.
While they first aimed to use the P85+ for its powerful rear-wheel-drive
motor, the new dual motor P100D was just too much of an improvement to be
ignored for their championship.
Especially now that Tesla finally started pushing the software update
promised by CEO Elon Musk that includes an Easter Egg to enable an even
quicker 0 to 60 mph acceleration in the Tesla Model S P100D Ludicrous.
The vehicle was already the “Quickest Production Car in the World” with
a 2.5-second 0 to 60 mph acceleration, but now the first test with the
new update showed a 2.4-second time.
But that’s only for the production version of the vehicle. Electric GT
strips the interior of its race cars, which reduces significantly the
weigth of its vehicles. Musk recently said that the acceleration from 0
to 60 mph could be improved to 2.1 seconds in a stripped down Model S
P100D:

@elonmusk FF’s (petty) claim of 2.39 is also in a car with race seats
and no interior finishings. How fast is a stripped down S P100D?

@trevoclark Good point. 2.34 would be a production Tesla. Stripped down,
maybe as low as 2.1.

It’s exactly, or actually even a little better, what Electric GT is now
claiming at the Autosport International Show with their own modified
Tesla Model S P100D displayed in the Live Action booth.
They say that their stripped down P100D with Ludicrous+ can accelerate
from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.1 seconds.

It would mean that 60 mph could easily be reached in 2.0 seconds and it
would make the vehicle untouchable up to that speed.
They claim to have reduced the vehicle’s ~2,250 kg weight by about 500
kg to achieve that kind of performance.
Of course, stripping the interior accounts for the bulk of the weight
reduction, but they also claim to have changed parts of the suspension
and brakes.

It will be interesting to see the vehicle on the race track and we shouldn
’t have to wait too long since the company has been promising videos
ahead of the championship’s beginning later this year.
It’s going to take place on racing circuits in Europe and the Americas.:
“There will be 10 teams and 20 drivers, who will compete across seven
races during season one. Weekends will consist of a 20-minute practice
session, 60-minute qualifying, a day race (60km) and a dusk race (60km).
Each round will be a weekend-long festival of technology and innovation
for sustainability, in and around the circuits.”
Electric GT has been adding world-class drivers to its lineup of teams,
including the experienced race car driver, Tesla owner, and environmental
activist, Leilani Münter.
