violations

The Scot didn't mind being penalised in his four-set win over Joao Sousa and
said afterwards ''I haven't requested to not have an umpire''
Andy Murray shamed Rafa Nadal by insisting he had no problem with an umpire
who hit him with two time violations on Thursday.
The Scot was penalised twice by Frenchman Pascal Maria for taking too long
between points - including the loss of a first serve - during his four-set
win over Joao Sousa at the French Open .
Defending champion Rafa Nadal admitted this week he has had Carlos Bernades
banned from officiating his matches since the Brazilian umpire twice cracked
down on his time-wasting in February.
Players are allowed 25 seconds between points in normal tournaments but only
20 seconds at Grand Slams. Serial offender Nadal took up to 35 seconds
between points during his win over his fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro
yesterday without being sanctioned.
Murray was penalised in the second set for taking 28 seconds – and then in
the third set for 29 seconds when he waited for the jumbo screens on Court
Philippe Chatrier to stop showing a replay.
But after setting up a blockbuster third round clash with Nick Kyrgios, the
No 3 seed did not blame Maria – and insisted speeding up play was good for
the game.
“I wasn't annoyed with the time thing at all,” he said. “I made no issue
of it on the court. I didn't say anything to the umpire - I wasn't disputing
that maybe I played too slow. The umpire's job is to make the players play at
the right speed.
“I haven't requested to not have an umpire. All I know is it was just from
the players' perspective that the umpires are doing their job by enforcing
the rules.
Sometimes the players don't know and sometimes you can be up at the line
ready to serve, and a photographer in the front row gets up and moves or the
Spidercam moves across the court or something and it stops you for three
seconds and you're over the time and you get a warning.
“Sometimes it's tricky, but I think most of the umpires have a pretty good
understanding on the court. I know Rafa has had a few issues with Carlos, but
for the most part, I think, everyone gets on with it pretty well.”
The Wimbledon winner suffered a similar time-violation at the Australian Open
in January when the giants screens in the Margaret Court Arena showed a
replay of his then girlfriend Kim – and Murray waited for the buzz to calm
down in the crowd.
Murray revealed Maria had warned him about his slow play before penalising
him the first time – and admitted his guilt. “I like the time rule,” he
said. “I think it's there for a reason. Sometimes I play too slow and that's
unintentional.
“I don't mean to do it. I'm sure there was maybe one or two times before
that where I have played too slowly and he told me. But obviously as a player
you have no idea how long you're taking in between the points.
“The reality is when you're out there playing on a court like that, things
do kind of happen sometimes. You don't get the ball in time or the towel in
time.
“Or the second one that I got genuinely I was up at the line I think in good
time, but they were showing the highlight from the point before, so I didn't
serve. So sometimes things like that make it tougher for the players.
But there were points today where I got told I was playing too slow and I
tried to speed up.”
Murray admitted he had no idea when he was going over the time limit. “How
are the players supposed to know?”
But the Scot reckoned having a shot clock on court to show the 20 seconds
would “take the fans out of the match a little bit” because it could kill
the atmosphere on big points.
He added: “I just think in general, for tennis, it's better to have a better
understanding of what the rule actually is, how it's going to be enforced,
and how we can make it better for the umpires.
“Because sometimes the players get angry at the umpires, and sometimes they
are doing the right thing. It's one of the few rules in our sport which there
is a bit of a gray area there. It's better when rules are black and white.”
Murray dropped his first set in six meetings to claycourt specialist Sousa
before winning 6-2 4-6 6-4 6-1 for his 12th consecutive victory on clay.
Despite a strong start, he struggled with his overhead shots on a breezy
afternoon and ITV had to apologise for the Scot's on-court language during
the tight second set.
But after a stuttering start to the third set, the time violations seemed to
inspire Murray and he raced to the fourth set in only 25 minutes.
He was then interviewed on court after the match by Fabrice Santoro, the
former French player who was wearing a kilt in his honour. “I'm pretty sure
it was the first time,” Murray laughed. “He looked good.”
