NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has once again criticized U.S. export restrictions on
semiconductors to China, arguing that sanctions against the country will
ultimately harm the United States. According to a report by Hong Kong’s South
China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 16th, Huang revealed at a recent event in
New York that due to U.S. semiconductor export restrictions, NVIDIA could no
longer sell advanced products to Chinese companies, causing its market share
in the advanced chip sector in China to drop from 95% to 0%. He stated, “At
the moment, we’re 100% out of China.”
Since 2022, NVIDIA has been prohibited from exporting advanced AI accelerators
such as the A100, H100, and H200 to China. Although it received approval to
sell the H20, a lower-performance AI accelerator designed for the Chinese
market, Chinese authorities launched an investigation into the chip due to
security concerns. Additionally, it was reported that Chinese authorities have
advised domestic companies to avoid using NVIDIA’s products.
Huang remarked, “NVIDIA’s exclusion from the Chinese market is not bad for
China and even ‘worse’ for the U.S.,” adding, “What harms China could
oftentimes also harm America, and even worse.” He also mentioned Chinese AI
developers, saying that China has “about 50 per cent of the world’s AI
researchers,” and added, “It’s a mistake not to have those researchers
build AI on American technology.”
Huang has consistently criticized U.S. semiconductor sanctions against China.
The SCMP noted, “Huang’s comment echoed his long-held position that Nvidia
has to sell its products to China or the market will be handed over to Chinese
competitors like Huawei Technologies.” Previously, Huang stated that in the
chip manufacturing sector, China lags behind the U.S. by approximately ‘a few
nanometers.’
In reality, Chinese semiconductor companies are striving for technological
self-reliance. Major Chinese tech firms, including Huawei, Alibaba, Tencent,
ByteDance, and Baidu, are all deeply engaged in chip research through in-house
projects or external investments. As a result, NVIDIA’s once-dominant market
share in China is gradually declining.
