Nathan Eovaldi expected to miss all of 2017 as Yankees righthander has torn
flexor tendon, partially torn UCL
Nathan Eovaldi’s season is over, and his 2017 looks done as well.
The Yankees righthander revealed Tuesday afternoon that he will need Tommy
John surgery to repair a partial tear of the UCL in his right elbow. He also
tore his flexor tendon off the bone in his right forearm, an injury that will
require a second surgery.
Brian Cashman told the Daily News that doctors will perform both surgeries in
one procedure on Friday. Eovaldi said he is leaning toward having Yankees
head physician Dr. Christopher Ahmed conduct the operation.
Because this is Eovladi’s second Tommy John — he had the same surgery done
in high school — the recovery time could be up to 18 months. The flexor
tendon surgery takes three to six months to heal.
Yankees' trade for Eovaldi worth it despite Tommy John setback
Mets righthander Zack Wheeler underwent surgery to repair both a torn UCL and
torn flexor tendon in March of 2015, and he has yet to return to the majors.
“It’s a huge blow,” a dejected Eovaldi said outside the Yankees clubhouse
Tuesday. “It’s my second one, so it’s a big deal. Hopefully everything
goes well with the surgery, and (I’ll) work hard to get back.”
Eovaldi said the “very best-case scenario” is for him to return out of the
bullpen at the end of the 2017 season, but that possibility is highly
unlikely, according to Dr. David Altchek, who gave Eovaldi a second opinion
on the elbow.
“He’s one of the hardest workers we’ve had here, one of the best makeup
and work ethic guys,” Cashman told The News of Eovaldi. “He’s young and he
has the work ethic and makeup to come back from this.”
Enjoy anonymity now, Aaron Judge! Yankees have a future star
Eovaldi is in his final year of his contract. He is eligible for arbitration
after this season, but given the circumstances, the Yankees could non-tender
him. In that case, Eovaldi would become a free agent.
Cashman said the Yankees have not yet discussed Eovaldi’s contract situation.
“Let’s get him to have a successful surgery. Those decisions don’t have to
be made now,” the Bombers’ GM said. “The most important thing is to get
him the best medical care and then have him start the rehab process.
“Everything else, we’ll deal with over time.”

Eovaldi was placed on the disabled list Friday because of elbow discomfort
after pitching just one inning against the Red Sox last Wednesday at Fenway.
The righthander said he first started feeling pain in his arm after his
previous start at home against the Mets on Aug. 4, but thought it was just “
general soreness.” He threw a bullpen that week without any issue. But then
he started to warm up before his start in Boston and sensed something wasn’t
right.
“It felt like I couldn’t really let my fastball go. And if I did, something
bad would happen,” Eovaldi said. “Just kind of felt like a little pinch (in
my elbow) after every time I’d throw a fastball.”
Eovaldi powered through, figuring he could get through the start by relying
on his off-speed pitches. But his velocity tapered off in that first inning,
and he was removed from the contest.
Still, he didn’t think it was anything major until he received the results
of the MRI, revealing the extent of the damage.
“To have this and the results,” Eovaldi said, “I was really surprised.”
Eovaldi’s last Tommy John surgery came nine years ago when he was 17 and a
prized prospect out of Alvin, Tex. Eovaldi said that injury was much
different. He experienced excruciating pain — “by far the worst” of his
life — after trying to throw a slider.
“I knew immediately,” Eovladi said. “And I stopped throwing.”
This time around, Eovaldi tried to play through the discomfort, and it may
have cost him.
He’ll join the list of pitchers who’ve undergone two Tommy John surgeries,
many of whom failed to return to form.
