ROKS Chungnam (FFG-828) was recently photographed at Hyundai Heavy Industries
shipyard in Ulsan undergoing finishing touches prior to its scheduled launch
in late April. Moored next to it is the guided missile destroyer ROKS
Jeongjo the Great (DDG-995). Chungnam-class frigate (FFG-III) is a larger
and improved successor to the preceding classes of Incheon-class frigate
(FFG-I) and Daegu-class frigate (FFG-II). Its most noticeable improvement is
the fixed AESA multi-function radar developed by Hanwha Systems which
replaces SPS-550K AESA radar found on Incheon and Daegu-class frigates. It is
also 500 tons larger and 7 meters longer than the Daegu-class frigate. Total
of 6x Chungnam-class frigates will be built to fully phase out Republic of
Korea Navy’s remaining obsolete Pohang-class corvettes and Ulsan-class
frigates. It will then be succeeded by FFX Batch-IV program.
