Happiest People at Citi Field Are the Fans. For $25, Why Not?
The Yankees were visitors in their hometown Monday night, which is not
unusual when they are playing at Citi Field and the team in the other dugout
is the Mets.
But there was nothing usual about this night, particularly the fact that the
Yankees would be playing the Tampa Bay Rays in what technically was a neutral
site, but only technically. Just how many Yankee fans would make the trip to
Queens on short notice on Monday remained to be seen, but the crowd was
expected to be outnumbered by empty seats.
“I think it’ll be pretty strange, because the atmosphere is usually
electric when we’re here,” Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said before the
first of the three games here against the Rays. “It’ll probably be a little
bit different because we’re not playing the Mets and there wasn’t a lot of
time to sell tickets. All of these guys have played in the minor leagues, so
they understand.”
Hurricane Irma forced this series to be relocated from Tropicana Field in St.
Petersburg, Fla. That meant the Yankees got to sleep in their own beds for
three more nights than they expected to this season. And for fans, the bonus
was even better — the seats for the three games were all priced at $25,
which meant you could sit close to the field for a lot less money than it
would normally take to do so.
