Cubs will not have Aroldis Chapman extension
According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Cubs will not have a contract
extension in place with Aroldis Chapman when their trade for the closer
becomes official.
They tried hard, as did the Yankees before agreeing to this five-player swap,
but Chapman is apparently intent on testing the free agent waters following
the 2016 season. He is headed to the Cubs in exchange for shortstop prospect
Gleyber Torres, outfield prospect Billy McKinney, right-hander Adam Warren,
and minor league outfielder Rashad Crawford. Chapman will take over at closer
on the north side of Chicago, with Hector Rondon moving to a setup role.
