The decision by the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters to include right-hander Yu
Darvish’s uniform number in a signing package for a high-school sensation
did not go over well with his father.
Darvish wore No. 11 with the Fighters and continued to use the number in his
rookie season with the Texas Rangers. In negotiations with high-school
pitching sensation Shoehi Otani, the Fighters guaranteed that he will have
Darvish’s number.
This is the second time that the Fighters used a famous uniform number as an
inducement. They previously gave away the No. 2 of infielder Michihiro
Ogasawara, a two-time batting champion.
“Ichiro’s number 51 is protected by Orix,” Farsa Darvish told reporters. “
They gave away Ogasawara’s number. He did more than Yu. I would like them
to become a team that values their history more. … [Other teams in] Japan
and the U.S. take better care of their history.”
