Despite all of the rumors, the Red Sox aren’t expected to deal Josh Beckett
in advance of Tuesday’s 4 p.m. trade deadline and probably won’t ship out
Jacoby Ellsbury either, ESPNBoston.com’s Gordon Edes reports.
The Red Sox discussed Beckett with the Rangers, but the talks went nowhere,
according to reports. Because Beckett will make $31.5 million between 2013
and ’14, he is likely to clear waivers, meaning the Red Sox could still deal
him next month.
Ellsbury, on the other hand, won’t be clearing waivers, and while the Red
Sox have fielded several inquiries, they have no plans to trade last year’s
AL MVP runner-up. Ellsbury will be eligible for free agency for the first
time after next year, and the Red Sox figure to make a bid to re-sign him
this winter, though he’s likely to want Carl Crawford money.
