Valentine didn't much buy into the increasingly stern limits on pitchers in
the United States, and his experience in Japan only confirmed to him his
opinion. Valentine said none of his pitchers for the Chiba Lotte Marines
suffered an arm injury during his six years as manager, despite consistently
throwing bullpen sessions in excess of 200 pitches.
"The one thing that doesn't compute is less than better. It doesn't match.
More is better," Valentine said, mentioning that his Red Sox pitchers will
start off spring with a 32-pitch bullpen session.
