KIT CHAN is all for waking up to new dawns — including her first solo
concert here in 10 years, turning 40 next year, and even working as a
freelance PR executive.
Who moved my cheese?” bellows Kit Chan, sleepy-eyed and tousled-haired, as
she rummages through the fridge, her silk robe rippling with impatience.
There is no cheese, of course. And it’s two in the afternoon. Kit’s just
channelling the mood for our breakfast-themed shoot. We’re in our photo
studio’s pantry, and she’s been out of bed for the better half of the day.
If we try hard enough, though, maybe we can almost nudge the midday sun back
towards the horizon, coax the chirping birds out and taste our morning kopi.
“If only I looked this glam after waking up at home,” jokes Kit in her low
speaking voice, a stark contrast to the higher crystalline vocals she’s
famous for in song. Or maybe she’s doing that gravelly, just-out-of-bed
thing. Whatever it is, it’s working in tandem with those trademark sleepy
eyes — “the first thing my classmates noticed about me in school,” she
coos — and her alabaster skin which complements today’s simulated morning
light.
Then, like a shot of caffeine through your system, her mellow mood perks up.
“This is one of the most fun shoots I’ve had,” enthuses Kit, as we put her
through a session of what she calls “chwee kway romanticisation”. In
between takes, she discusses everything with her manager and stylists — from
scientist Jane Goodall (“that chimpanzee woman, she’s so dignified”) to
Nicolas Cage (“did you hear the rumour about him being a vampire?”) and
lemon tarts (“love ’em!”). We’re guessing Kit’s the chirpy type who
prattles about everything under the 7am sun as her half-nodding partner
drives her to work. She confirms that fact: “I’m not grumpy at all in the
mornings, as long as I have my coffee and eat something. Once my alarm clock
rings, boiing, I’m outta bed and chatty.” Hardly the ice queen with the
enigmatic half-smile she was famous for being in the ’90s. “One’s career
should be as varied as the seasons. It can’t always be summer or winter,”
Kit says of her image change.
You could say this seize-the-day attitude has influenced her life choices.
Not content with being just a singer under a recording label, she struck out
on her own last year, forming her own label, Banshee Empire. Then there was
that six-year hiatus between 2004 and 2010, after she paved the arduous road
into Taiwan for future local singers with her 1994 breakout album Heartache,
and conquered the musical stage with Jacky Cheung in 1997’s Snow Wolf Lake.
She describes herself as “bohemian”, though we think she’s more
boho-yuppie. Kit’s still very private about her personal life, and steers
clear of any “morning after” or “breakfast-in-bed with whom” jokes. Her
boho chick veneer is one that she’s smart enough to pull off, and wants you
to believe. On the windshield of her black Volkswagen Beetle convertible is a
“What will you defend?” Mindef sticker, to which Kit has scribbled: “My
happiness and freedom to choose”.
