SINGAPORE: Unlike most concerts that aim to be more elaborate than the
competition, Singapore singer Kit Chan says her upcoming solo concert titled
The Music Room will be decidedly less flashy than other Mandopop gigs.
Chan expressed that the concert, to be held at the Marina Bay Sands Grand
Theatre from October 13-14, will not contain any pyrotechnics or multiple
costume changes to wow the audience.
Instead, "minimalism" is the watchword for the project because she believes
sometimes less is indeed more.
The show will rely on understated theatrical lighting by "December Rains"
lighting designer Dorothy Png to fire up the audience's imagination, and
bring them closer to the emotions that run through her songs.
Minimalist it may be, but Chan says The Music Room which will showcase songs
selected from throughout her 18-year career, will be as entertaining and
dramatic as any elaborate concert.
"I think it will be dramatic because I am a drama queen at heart," said Chan
with a playful grin.
"The kind of show I want to put up is something more evocative. Sometimes
very stark images and very strong images can be portrayed using very
minimalistic means."
"I want to offer audiences an alternative [to flashy concerts]. Very often,
in Asian society, people will jump on the bandwagon and follow trends. Maybe
it is part of our culture."
"But having an alternative is a good thing. So I hope audiences can give this
form of presentation a chance and experience it. Not everything has to be
'Wow, Wow, Wow' to be entertaining," explained Chan.
"There are times when you would really appreciate like a mee siam or a laksa
where it is really rich and all the flavours are heavy and intense.
"And there are times when the most sublime dish you have ever eaten could be
just [seasoned with] really good olive oil, pepper and sea salt," added the
self-professed foodie.
Sacrifice for art's sake
However, Chan will have to put aside her love of food at least until her
concert performances are done - she says she is doing her best to lose weight
and look her best for The Music Room.
"I've now been exercising a lot and watching what I eat. I'm sacrificing for
my art!
"It is really hard for me to lose weight! I'm vain but I am not so vain that
I would control what I eat, unless it is for my performance," said Chan,
revealing that she now exercises five days a week.
Chan was not the only one who had to make sacrifices for her upcoming concert
- Taiwan superstar Wang Lee Hom pushed back one of his own concerts for her
sake.
Wang had originally hired veteran music director Wu Qing Long to work on his
concert but Chan also wanted Wu to be the music director for The Music Room.
The Music Room's closing night overlapped with Wang's first concert.
Fortunately, Wang volunteered to delay his concert when he heard Chan wanted
Wu for her own gigs.
"I really have to thank Wang Lee Hom. He is so magnanimous," said Chan.
She went on to express that she was grateful for the support Wu and her other
showbiz buddies have given her since her showbiz comeback last year.
"After six years away from the music industry, when I came back to the stage,
to the recording studio, everything was unfamiliar."
"Really, the Chinese saying 'When you are outside, you depend on your
friends' is true."
"If not for the relationships and ties that I have built earlier in my
career, I wouldn't be able to do a lot of things," said Chan.
Tickets to The Music Room will go on sale on August 8.
