我们总是为Miss Brill寻求解决方法：为什么要否认自己的寂寞，为什么不离开那些细碎
且徒劳的白日梦，为什么无法与现实沟通，为什么如此绝望却又不敢去爱……如同一旦解
决，情况就会变好。然而Miss Brill目睹英国人的妻子与ermine toque所过的日子，它平
凡，庸俗，不堪到必须以幻想去遮掩，放弃白日梦后，她过的将是一样的日子。
Baudelaire“Windows”叙述他看见窗外行经的一位中年妇女，虚构了关于她的传说
(legend)，并因此哀叹不已，末段写到：“Perhaps you will say ‘Are you sure
that your story is the real one?’But what does it matter what reality is
outside myself, so long as it has helped me to live, to feel that I am, and
what I am?”Miss Brill与人群疏离，和Baudelaire的窗户同样出现“面纱(veil)”的作
用，借由不再看见现实，他们得以继续想像，得以为之快乐，悲伤，甚至坠入情网。
现实永远不及白日梦斑斓美好，这层面纱不能被掀起，就如同Galatea不能活过来。Ovid
“Metamorphoses”中Cyprus的Pygmalion厌弃现实中的女性，而爱上自己所雕刻的
Galatea；他需要的是一个毫无反应、充满narcissistic式自我投射的对象，使自己绝望
的爱情无限延长，以保持对“她”的兴趣。Fur stole是Miss Brill的Galatea，她的投射
，她白日梦唯一的倾听者，当她过度靠近现实，年轻的heroine掀开面纱，让fur stole显
露现实里丑恶的面貌(“It’s exactly like a fried whiting.”)，Miss Brill欲维持自
我认同，只能转移投射，遗弃已然活过来的，哭泣的fur stole(“When she put the lid
on she thought she heard something crying.”)。
