Two campesino members of the MST were killed and six wounded after military
police attacked their encampment, say sources.

Brazilian military police attacked an encampment in the southern state of
Parana Thursday evening, killing at least two campesino members of the
Landless Workers' Movement (MST), and wounding at least six others.

According to reports by the MST, two units of the Parana Military Police,
along with security guards from lumber company Araupel that technically owns
the land, entered the Dom Tomas Balduino encampment, where some 2,500
families have been living.

The MST reported that the community had been receiving “constant threats
from the security forces and company gunmen” prior to the attack.

According to officials, the police were victims of an “ambush” by some 20
campesinos and were forced to respond by opening fire, according to reports
by EFE.

The police attack is the latest example of territorial conflicts in the
country, where landless rural workers have long been fighting for access to

The ongoing land struggles sparked the creation of the MST movement in the
1980s, whereby groups have initiated occupations to pressure land

Thursday's attack was carried out on one of two MST encampments in the state

The second encampment, "Heirs to the Land," is in the municipality of Rio
Bonito do Iguana, where more than 1,000 families now live. The occupation
began May 1, 2014.
