I have seen police with the big wooden truncheons; those are ok as far as I
am concerned. This though is a number of steps too far for me. What can
something like this do, but promote fear? Promoting fear can in no way
improve the quality of life for anyone. Promoting fear is also what led to
the Iraq war and a second GWB presidency; I think by this point everyone can
view them as disasters.
First, there were all the barbed wire barriers anywhere near the government
buildings around Main Station going up and coming down. Now this. This is not
what a free society should look like.
BTW, and I don't have any stats to back this up, but I will guess that even
with what happened, riding the MRT was much safer statistically last week
than riding a scooter in Taipei. Irrational acts still require reasoned
responses. This is not reasonable.
2. Are we America or Taiwan? Let's tone down the fear. One stupid guy who
randomly killed some people shouldn't cause the destruction of our peaceful,
friendly society. Now there are live weapons on the MRT for those crazies to
use! Smart!

I wasn't afraid of using the MRT. But seeing one of these guys would make me
very uncomfortable. Are submachine guns really necessary? This is certainly
not a "freedom of fear".
