Subway lines were evacuated and dozens of emergency vehicles swarmed the area near New York's Time Square on Monday after an explosion was reported near the Port Authority bus terminal.
"The NYPD is responding to reports of an explosion of unknown origin at 42nd Street and 8th Ave, #Manhattan," the tweet said. "The A, C and E line are being evacuated at this time. Info is preliminary, more when available."
One man was in custody, according to multiple media reports. No fatalities were immediately reported.
After the blast, the Port Authority said the sprawling terminal remained open except for the entrance to the subway at the terminal on Eighth Avenue. Later, the terminal was closed.
"Due to police activity following an incident, the Port Authority Bus Terminal (@PABusTerminal) is being temporarily closed by authorities," the authority tweeted.
The explosion came in an area packed with rush hour commuters. Holiday season tourism has also added to crowds on the streets of sidewalks of Manhattan.
Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted that he was being briefed on the incident, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he was at the scene.
