其实是从 Auckland（奥克兰）迁移过来的。

1865年，Wellington（威灵顿）成为新的新西兰首都，代替原先由 William Hobson
在 1841 确立的首都 Auckland（奥克兰）。新西兰议会于 1862 年 7 月 7 日
首次在此暂定的基础上于威灵顿召开会议；在 1863 年 11 月，新西兰总理
Alfred Domett 在奥克兰向议会提出了某一决议
“......政府所在地......应该移转到库克海峡某些适当的区域”。
显然有些担心人口多的南岛（同时是金矿所在地）将选择在大英帝国内，
形成一个单独的殖民地。那些被邀请且来自澳大利亚的几名地位中立的专员，
宣布威灵顿是一个合适的地点，因为它在新西兰的中心位置，且同时拥有良港。
议会于 1865 年 7 月 26 日第一次在威灵顿正式举行会议。
当时，威灵顿的人口只有 4,900 人（2013 年 6 月为 397,900 人）。
In 1865, Wellington became the capital city in place of Auckland,
which William Hobson had made the capital in 1841. The New Zealand
Parliament had first met in Wellington on 7 July 1862, on a temporary basis;
in November 1863, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Alfred Domett,
placed a resolution before Parliament in Auckland that
"... it has become necessary that the seat of government ...
should be transferred to some suitable locality in Cook Strait."
Apparently, there had been some concerns that the more populous
South Island (where the goldfields were located) would choose to
form a separate colony in the British Empire. Several Commissioners
invited from Australia, chosen for their neutral status,
declared that Wellington was a suitable location because of
its central location in New Zealand and good harbour.
Parliament officially met in Wellington for the first time on 26 July 1865.
At that time, the population of Wellington was just 4,900.
