Dear CNN Editorial Staff:
Greetings, I’m citizen of Taiwan (R.O.C.). Right now, our country is
having mayoral elections. One of our legislators named Shulei Lo has accused
that one of a major American company called Medtronic Co. is suspected of
selling low-quality ECMO（Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation) medical
equipment to the Taiwanese hospitals. According to Mrs. Lo, hospitals in the
U.S. would never use any ECMO equipment from Medtronic because of its low
quality. She has also questioned that one of the mayor candidates, Dr. Wen-Je
Ko might be involved in the Taiwnese hospital’s purchasing of ECMO equipment
from Medtronic for the purpose of making his own profits. According to Lo,
Dr. Ko who is the leader of ECMO technology researches and practices used his
own influences in the National Taiwanese University Hospital (NTU) and forced
the hospital to purchase ECMO equipment from Medtronic company, because the
other hospitals in Taiwan mostly use equipment from Germany companies such as
Maquet and Medos, or Japanese company like Terumo. Many of us believe
legislator Lo is using this issue as part of their mayoral campaign
strategies against their opponent Dr. Ko, regardless of how it is actually
impacting the national hospitals’ and the Medtronic company’s reputations.
Upon hearing Lo’s accusations, many medical workers and students are now
concerned about the reputation of our nation’s top-tier hospital – NTU, as
well as the goodwill and reputation of Medtronic Company. We here as citizens
from Taiwan would like to ask CNN to please take investigation in this issue
so our nation could have factual information from an international media
source such as CNN.
