Lionel Messi and father sentenced to 21 months in jail for tax fraud but unlik
ely to actually go to prison
A statement from the Spanish court on Wednesday said it had also sentenced the
Argentine player’s father Jorge to 21 months in jail for the same three crim
es.
The sentence can be appealed through the Spanish supreme court, the statement
said.
However, under Spanish law, a prison sentence under two years can be served un
der probation, meaning Messi and his father are unlikely to go to jail.
The court ordered Messi to pay a fine of around 2 million euros ($A3 million)
and his father to pay 1.5 million euros ($A2.25 million) for the crimes.
Lionel Messi had argued that he wasn’t aware of the tax arrangements set in p
lace by his father and other advisors. But the state attorney, Mario Maza, com
pared the player to a mafia boss who has deniability on the illegal goings-on
in his name.
