Chelsea Here Chelsea There: First senior goal for Lawrence, Baxter bounces
back, Ampadu into last 16
24 OCT 2022
In our latest round-up of the action involving Chelsea players on loan
over the last week, Henry Lawrence scored his first goal in senior
football in style, Nathan Baxter helped Hull City continue their
resurgence in the Championship and Ethan Ampadu extended his cup run in
Italy...

Hull City hadn't won an away game all season before last week, but Nathan
Baxter helped them record their first back-to-back victories in 2022/23,
both on the road, as their much improved form under interim manager Andy
Dawson continued.

Baxter and Hull are starting to find form in the Championship
A relatively straightforward 3-1 win at Blackpool in midweek was followed
by a 4-2 victory at Rotherham United on Saturday, although it took Hull
longer to take the ascendancy, with Baxter required to show strong hands
in tipping a fierce volley over the bar at 0-0.

Those wins move the Tigers up to 16th in the Championship table and six
points clear of the relegation zone. They also saw Hull score seven goals
in two games, having drawn a blank in six of their previous seven
fixtures.
Baba Rahman came off the bench in a disappointing game for Reading away at
Swansea City, as after taking a 2-0 lead in the first half, a spectacular
long-range strike sealed a 3-2 win for the in-form hosts by the final
whistle. However, the Ghanian was in the starting line-up as Reading
recovered with a 2-0 home victory against Bristol City on Saturday, ending
a run of three straight defeats and leaving them only outside the play-off
spots on goal difference.
It was a tough week for Dujon Sterling at Stoke City. Following a
controversial 1-0 defeat at Rotherham, when the only goal came from a
corner taken quickly while Stoke defender Phil Jagielka was receiving
treatment for a clash of heads, Sterling was withdrawn at half-time with
the Potters drawing 0-0 with Coventry City, only to see his team-mates
concede twice to lose 2-0.

Things went better for Henry Lawrence, as he found the back of the net for
the first time in senior football. Lawrence opened the scoring as MK Dons
booked their place in the knockout stages of the EFL Trophy with a 2-0 win
at Walsall. It was an impressive maiden strike, too, as the full-back cut
in from the left and beat his man before curling a lovely strike into the
bottom corner from the edge of the box just after the hour mark.

Lawrence missed their League One fixture at the weekend, but Jamie Cumming
came back into the side to put in a good performance as MK Dons hosted
Wycombe. The goalkeeper caught the eye by saving a trio of headers, one to
deny Sam Vokes from close range being particularly impressive, but it
wasn't enough to prevent his side losing 1-0 and slipping to the bottom of
the League One table.

Lucas Bergstrom and Peterborough United bounced back from a midweek
penalty shoot-out defeat to Wycombe Wanderers in the EFL Trophy with a
hard-fought 2-1 win at 10-man Oxford United, continuing their push for
promotion from League One. They had to ride their luck at times though,
with Oxford denied a late equaliser by a goal-line clearance.
Bryan Fiabema was a late substitute for Forest Green Rovers but didn't
have time to make an impact as they were beaten 1-0 by Portsmouth, making
it eight games without a win for the promoted side.
Jayden Wareham started for Leyton Orient against his parent club, as they
were eliminated from the EFL Trophy by a 3-2 defeat to the Chelsea
development squad. Wareham came closest to opening the scoring in the
first half, though, sending the ball narrowly wide from a cross with
goalkeeper Eddie Beach beaten. However, the second half was much more
entertaining, as Orient came from behind to lead 2-1, before two goals in
the last two minutes by Malik Mothersille secured a 3-2 win for the Blues
and the end of the home team's chances of making the knockout stages.
Ethan Ampadu was at the centre of Spezia's defence as they took a break
from a difficult league campaign with victory in the Coppa Italia, beating
Brescia 3-1 at home to book their place in the last 16. Switching to a
back three for Serie A over the weekend, they found things more difficult
as they suffered a third-consecutive defeat in that competition, losing
1-0 at Salernitana.

Callum Hudson-Odoi came off the bench to help Bayer Leverkusen salvage a
draw from an entertaining home match with Wolfsburg. The winger's team
were 2-1 down in a game which had already seen an own goal and two
penalties, one scored by Wolfsburg and one missed by Leverkusen. But they
found the equaliser 15 minutes after Hudson-Odoi's introduction, to make
it four points from three games under new manager Xabi Alonso.
