PL2 report: Chelsea 3 Blackburn Rovers 0
22 OCT 2022
Our development squad put in a terrific display at Kingsmeadow to extend
our unbeaten run in the PL2 to seven games as Mason Burstow, Omari
Hutchinson and Ben Elliott found the scoresheet.

Mark Robinson's men were in scintillating form as they were too good for
Blackburn Rovers this afternoon.
With multiple chances created in the first period we failed to find the
goal to break the deadlock. However, three second-half goals from Mason
Burstow, Omari Hutchinson from the penalty spot and Ben Elliott gave us an
impressive victory at home.
With both teams in form and looking to build on recent positive
performances, the fans at Kingsmeadow were poised for an exciting clash.
The first period of the game saw us dominate as we created opportunity
after opportunity, but we could not find the decisive blow. Burstow and
Bashir Humphreys both had headers which they got good connection on, but
the direction was missing as they both went wide.
We were keeping the ball well and finding space as our opponents were
struggling to get out of their half. Charlie Webster had a golden chance
as his header looked destined for the net, but goalkeeper Jordan Eastham
saved well and held onto the ball.
Hutchinson had the best chance of the half, and he created it for himself
as he dribbled past two opponents and unleashed a powerful shot but the
Rovers shot-stopper again was in the right position to save well. The away
side's only chance of the game came in the second period as Junior
Nsangu's shot forced Eddie Beach to tip over the bar.

Leo Castledine filled in at centre-back today and did a great job in
ensuring a clean-sheet was kept
Again, we were creative in our set-pieces and a good move from a corner
between Lewis Hall and Webster led to the latter skipping past a challenge
in the box and firing towards goal but it just went wide of the post.
It took an hour on the dot for the deadlock to be broken and a Hutchinson
pass found Burstow who finished expertly past the goalkeeper to give us
the lead.
Elliott's deflected shot hit the post as we searched for a second goal to
seal victory. Despite our long periods of control, the second came just
before the 90th minute as Hutchinson was fouled by Leo Duru in the penalty
box. Hutchinson scored the penalty to get his second in as many games.
A top performance was capped with a third goal deep into stoppage time as
Elliott pounced on a cross and finished well.
== Team news ==
Robinson was forced into a few changes as Alfie Gilchrist and Derrick Abu
both had knocks so failed to make the squad. Cesare Casadei was suspended
following his dismissal last week against Manchester United. Zak Sturge
returned to the starting line-up after working his way back from injury.

Our development squad were looking to return to winning ways and extend
their unbeaten run
== Finding our rhythm ==
We edged the early moments of the game, settling on the ball much quicker
than our opponents without creating anything of note. Nevertheless, the
confidence of the home side was on full display in the opening 10 minutes
as we controlled proceedings.
The first chance of the game was a well-worked move which saw Hutchinson
feed Elliott and in a crowded penalty box he found space to fire
goalwards, but his shot flew over.
== Chances galore ==
It was relentless pressure from our young Blues as we were piling bodies
forward to try and open the scoring. Rankine and Hall both had blocked
shots that were heading for the net.
Hutchinson was next to have an effort on goal as a goalmouth scramble
following a corner fell nicely to his feet, but his right-footed shot was
straight at the keeper.
An inventive free-kick involving Webster and Hutchinson saw the latter
clip an inviting cross into the box, Burstow leapt highest and his
glancing header was just wide.
Hutchinson was involved again as he skipped past a challenge to clip
another ball this time with his right foot into the box and Webster was
there to meet the cross, but goalkeeper Eastham claimed impressively to
keep the scores level.

Charlie Webster leapt highest to almost give us the lead as his header was
saved
Another opportunity fell our way as the away side were now camped in their
half and a free-kick from Webster found the head of Humphreys, but similar
to the Burstow opportunity earlier on his glancing header just dropped on
the wrong side of the post.
The best chance of the first half came through Hutchinson who did well to
beat a couple of challenges before firing a shot towards goal but again
Eastham was well-positioned to stop the shot.
The second half started, and we resumed our control as Hutchinson let fly
from distance, but the assured Eastham was there again to claim. The away
side did have their first chance of the game as Nsangu had an effort from
just outside the penalty box that needed to be tipped over by Beach.
== Expected breakthrough ==
Smart play from a corner between Hall and Webster allowed the right-footed
central midfielder to carry the ball in stride into the box but his
smashed effort just went wide.
On the hour mark, the long overdue goal came, and it was Hutchinson who
picked up the ball in a pocket of space and played a reverse pass to
Burstow who composed himself and finished past the goalkeeper. That is his
second goal of the PL2 this season.

Mason Burstow grabbed his second goal of the PL2 season with a neat finish
towards the far corner of the goal
We had a great opening for a second as a cross from Rankine found Elliott
in the box but his shot following a deflection hit the post and fell
safely into the keeper's hands.
Sturge delivered a great cross which found the head of Burstow, but
Eastham was a man inspired as he made a fantastic save to tip the ball
round the post.
== Top performance ==
With our development squad cruising to victory, a late penalty was awarded
to us as Hutchinson was felled by Duru. The forward took the penalty and
sent the keeper the wrong way to double our lead.
We still pushed and Rankine almost found the back of the net as his shot
only just went wide. There was still enough time for a third and it came
through Elliott who pounced on a powerful cross from second half
substitute Jude Soonsup-Bell.

Ben Elliott got onto the scoresheet with the third of the game as he
latched onto Jude Soonsup-Bell's cross
A comfortable victory for our young Blues who extend their unbeaten run
and look ahead to Brighton Hove & Albion on Sunday next week.
