The eleven-year veteran is officially hanging up his spikes.
Outfielder Jason Bay has officially decided to retire from baseball,
according to an industry source. Bay was reportedly leaning towards
retirement in January, but did not make an official decision until now.
Bay, 35, drew some interest from teams in Japan this winter after hitting
.204 with 11 HR and 20 RBI in 68 games with the Mariners last season. He
opted to spend more time with his family instead of heading to Japan, and
will hang up his spikes after an eleven-year major league career.
In eleven major league seasons with the Padres (2003), Pirates (2003-2008),
Red Sox (2008-2009), Mets (2010-2012) and Mariners (2013), Bay was a lifetime
.266 hitter with 222 HR and 754 RBI. He was a three-time All-Star, and took
home the NL Rookie of the Year award in 2004 as well as a Silver Slugger in
2009. His best season came in 2009 with the Red Sox, when he finished seventh
in AL MVP voting after a year in which he hit .267 with 36 HR and 119 RBI.
