Mets sign Bobby Abreu, former Yankees and Phillies OF 'fits offensive philosophy'
Former All-Star Abreu last played in the majors in 2012 with the Dodgers, but
after failing to find a major league contract in 2013, returned to his native
Venezuela.
The Mets signed OF Bobby Abreu to a minor league contract Monday night and
assigned him to Triple-A Las Vegas. The 40-year old was released by the
Phillies this spring after being told he would not make their 25-man roster.
Abreu is attempting to return to the majors after a year-long absence. A
two-time All Star, Abreu has 2,437 career hits, 287 homers and 399 stolen
bases in 17 seasons with the Phillies, Angels, Astros, Dodgers and Yankees.
He last played in the majors in 2012 with the Dodgers, but after failing to
find a major league contract in 2013, he took a hiatus and returned to his
native Venezuela.
After watching him have big winter playing in the Venezuelan league, Mets
hitting coach Dave Hudgens said that he thought Abreu would be a good fit for
the Mets offensively. Abreu fits the Mets’ offensive philosophy and he felt
he would be a good hitting role model for their young players.
