TV Asahi Corp. canceled a performance by the South Korean pop group BTS after
a member was seen wearing a T-shirt depicting a detonating atomic bomb and
words marking their nation's liberation from Japanese colonial rule.
The broadcaster was scheduled to feature the internationally popular
seven-man group on its live show "Music Station" on the evening of Nov. 9.
But TV Asahi asked the group to cancel the performance after several
discussions with its record company, which included asking what the intent
was in wearing the T-shirt in question, an image of which was uploaded on the
Internet.
The T-shirt featured an image of the mushroom cloud of an atomic bomb as well
as the words, “Patriotism,” “Our History" "Liberation” and “Korea.”
The controversy set the Internet abuzz with comments from both critics and
fans of the group.
The comments included, “The dropping of the atomic bombs led to the end of
war, then liberation”; “It cannot be swept aside simply by saying, ‘We
wore it without knowing the meaning’”; and, “I feel sad and pained that
their chance to perform on the program is gone.”
On the BTS official website, a message in Japanese was posted on Nov. 8.
“We would like to offer an apology to our fans who were looking forward (to
watching us on the show) for the disappointing result. We will continue to
make every effort to enable us to meet fans while offering good music and
performances,” it said.
TV Asahi posted a comment on its website, saying, “Unfortunately, we made a
decision not to feature BTS on the program at this time based on our
comprehensive decision.”
On the Internet other comments were posted including, “The victims of (the
atomic bomb droppings) were not only Japanese. Numerous Koreans who lived in
Japan also passed away” and “Members work while crossing boundaries and
language barriers, which is kind of their job. They are being overwhelmed by
the interstate conflict. What can be bred from conflicts?”
BTS, which made its debut in 2013, drew 400,000 spectators in total in 10
countries and regions including the United States, Canada, South American
countries and Taiwan on its 2017 world concert tour.
It also has had a No. 1 hit on the U.S. Billboard chart, the first Korean
musical group to do so.
BTS members gave a speech to youths of the world in September asking them to,
“Love yourself,” at a UNICEF meeting at U.N. headquarters in New York,
which became a hot campaign.
