Rafael Heliodoro Valle)
Military Secret
(Answer to Rafael Heliodoro Valle)
—Roberto Sosa (1930 – 2011), translated from the Spanish by Jo Anne Engelber
t
The history of Honduras could be written on a rifle,
on a gunshot, or rather,
inside a drop of blood.

The Poor
—Roberto Sosa (1930 – 2011), translated from the Spanish by Spencer Reece
The poor are many
and so—
impossible to forget.
No doubt,
as day breaks,
they see the buildings
where they wish
they could live with their children.
They
can steady the coffin
of a constellation on their shoulders.
They can wreck
the air like furious birds,
blocking out the sun.
But not knowing these gifts,
they enter and exit through mirrors of blood,
walking and dying slowly.
And so,
one cannot forget them.
Toro
The Brutal Lovers
—Roberto Sosa (1930 – 2011), translated from the Spanish by Jo Anne Engelber
t
To Fil嫕der Diaz Chavez, Juan Antonio Medina Duron, and Carlos Sa犸 Toro
They, the aliens,
arrived from other worlds to this land that saw our birth.
We are the light, they said, not wasting words.
Multiplying deaths by treacheries
they came to call us friends,
to eat up everything and stay here in this land
that saw our birth, they, the linear and metallic ones,
they,
the brazen lovers of
Death.
Death to Death.
Tegucigalpa
—Roberto Sosa, translated by Jo Anne Engelbert
I live in a landscape
where time does not exist
and gold is meek.
We are always sad here but never know it.
No one has seen the sea
or known the friendship of the angel.
Yes, I am living here, or rather dying.
Here where the perfectly pure shadow of a boy
falls in the dust of a narrow street.
Cut down in flight, under a fleeing sky.
Sometimes hope (ever more distant)
spreads her long branches in the wind,
and I imagine you in color, dim city.
and hear impossible rhythms
that spin and spin
in the small circle of my certain rose.
But this is not you. Here
mute pain gesticulates
on every hill, over every bridge
the people trudge toward nothing.
The whistle of the pines brings echoes of blows.
Tegucigalpa,
Tegucigalpa,
harsh name that flows gently
only on the lips.
The City of Beggar Children
—Roberto Sosa, translated by Jo Anne Engelbert
Where do the beggar children come from,
what forces multiply their rags?
Whose heart has never felt those fingers
pecked
by birds with copper beaks?
Who hasn’t stopped to see their bones
and hear their voices
pleading like humiliated bells?
Let there be no beggar children dwarfed in doorways,
chilled by cemetery mist,
pale wall of the city.
Let there be children with toys,
bread
and stars beneath their shoes.
Let them play in the school yard
and catch insects in the grass.
Let them live in their own worlds
among the beings and the things they love.
EQUALITY
—Roberto Sosa, translated by Jo Anne Engelbert
I have been in cemeteries many times .
I have touched the angels
who watch over fallen poets .
I have read
the inscriptions engraved on plaques of useless gold .
I have long observed
the complex chapels
of Chinese families .
I have stopped next to the anonymous tombs
populated by insects and plants
which make one remember simple natural things .
Perhaps I have said to myself-
the gravestones of the arrogant
do not possess the grace of a flowering stalk .
The cemeteries open up like the sea
and receive us .
Indisputably
the living will not be able to destroy
the perfect equality of the dead.
