It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and
artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away.
We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries.
A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date. The family
requests privacy during their time of grief.

In You Want It Darker, Leonard Cohen sings “Hineni, hineni; I’m ready, my
lord," which was Abraham's response when God called on him to sacrifice his
son Isaac. It is also the name of a prayer of preparation and humility,
addressed to God, sung by the cantor on behalf of the congregation on Rosh
Hashanah. At the Oct 13, 2016 L.A., press event, Leonard talked about using
"hineni" in the lyrics of his new album's title song to reference a
"willingness to serve" that is - in the right circumstances - universal to
humanity. You can watch a video of that conversation here:

The Complete, Final Lyrics of You Want It Darker
The title song from Leonard Cohen's You Want It Darker album, scheduled for
release this fall, has become enormously popular since a portion of it aired
on an episode of Peaky Blinders in June. Now, the complete lyrics of You Want
It Darker are available. (Note: The following lyrics are those sung on the
album and vary somewhat from the "as written" lyrics published earlier in the
2016 Leonard Cohen Amsterdam Event booklet.) Posted by Allan Showalter.
You Want It Darker
If you are the dealer
I’m out of the game
If you are the healer
I’m broken and lame
If thine is the glory
Then mine must be the shame
You want it darker
We kill the flame
Magnified and sanctified
Be Thy Holy Name
Vilified and crucified
In the human frame
A million candles burning
For the help that never came
You want it darker
We kill the flame
Hineni Hineni
I’m ready, my Lord
There’s a lover in the story
But the story is still the same
There’s a lullaby for suffering
And a paradox to blame
But it’s written in the scriptures
And it’s not some idle claim
You want it darker
We kill the flame
They’re lining up the prisoners
The guards are taking aim
I struggled with some demons
They were middle-class and tame
Didn’t know I had permission
To murder and to maim
You want it darker
Hineni Hineni
I’m ready, my Lord
Magnified and sanctified
Be Thy Holy Name
Vilified and crucified
In the human frame
A million candles burning
For the love that never came
You want it darker
We kill the flame
If you are the dealer
I’m out of the game
If you are the healer
I’m broken and lame
If thine is the glory
Then mine must be the shame
You want it darker
We kill the flame
Hineni Hineni
I’m ready, my Lord

: <Story of Issac >
: The door it opened slowly,
: my father he came in;
: I was nine years old.
: And he stood so tall above me,
: his blue eyes they were shining
: and his voice was very cold.
: He said, "I've had a vision
: and you know I'm strong and holy,
: I must do what I've been told."
: So we started up the mountain,
: I was running, he was walking,
: and his axe was made of burning gold.
: The trees they got much smaller,
: the lake like a lady's mirror
: when we stopped to drink some wine.
: Then he threw the bottle over,
: I heard it broke a minute later
: and he put his hand on mine.
: I thought I saw an eagle
: but it might have been a vulture,
: I never could decide.
: Then my father built an altar,
: he looked once behind his shoulder,
: but he knew I would not hide.
: You who build these altars now
: to sacrifice our children,
: you must not do it anymore.
: A scheme is not a vision
: and you never have been tempted
: by a demon or a god.
: You who stand above them now,
: your hatchets blunt and bloody,
: you were not there before:
: When I lay upon a mountain
: and my father's hand was trembling
: with the beauty of the word.
: And if you call me Brother now,
: forgive me but I must inquire:
: just according to whose plan?
: When it all comes down to dust
: I will kill you if I must,
: I will help you if I can.
: When it all comes down to dust
: I will help you if I must,
: I'll kill you if I can.
: And mercy on our uniform,
: man of peace, man of war-
: the peacock spreads his fan!
