That's because even on ptt, the Taiwanese reddit, ppl don't give a shxt
about English. These "why not establish English" whining posts seems to pop up
every now and then. Ironically, they're not even written in English.
When the most frequently used English here is sth like
"It's good to drink?","IKEA" or "May show gun more?"
There's no doubt the language is literally dead among average Taiwanese ppl.
What's the point of learning it if you don't use it anyways? English lectures
in colleges will only result in people studying academic English.
But it's not like everyone here needs to write academic essays for a living,
Heck! even many academic theses/dissertations only require the summary to
be written in English.
For most students it's much easier to hire someone to translate their shxt
rather than handling this rusty language which they no longer give a shxt about
since senior high.
Still, English is ubiquitous, which is good news for those who want to immerse
in it. Just check your browser right now, if your interface isn't English,
then you're not using the language. If you're still watching movies with
subtitles, you're still not using it. If you read Apple Daily instead of
Focus Taiwan/Taipei Times as your internet news source, once again you're not
using it.
So let's rephrase, what's the point of learning it if you don't use it?
And when ppl are really using it, there will be no need to learn it through
college.
