Jaguar Inks Deals With Samsung SDI For Cylindrical 21700 Battery Cells
Jaguar Land Rover to use 21700 cylindrical cells.
According to Korea Times, Samsung SDI will supply lithium-ion batteries for
future Jaguar Land Rover electric cars.
Currently, the Jaguar I-PACE is equipped with pouch cells from LG Chem, but
it seems that JLR intends to try out Samsung SDI and the cylindrical type of
cells, the new 21700 format used by Tesla in the Model 3.
The cylindrical type apparently will be produced at the European factory in
Hungary, although Samsung SDI first needs to install a new production line
for the 21700. The Jaguar I-PACE is assembled near, in Austria – it’s not
yet known where the new models will be made.
“Samsung SDI fiercely competed with other battery makers including LG Chem
and Panasonic to win a contract from the British carmaker since last year.
The company declined to confirm, saying “we cannot offer information related
with our customer companies.””
“Samsung SDI is expected to initially supply EV cells of 5 gigawatt hours
(GWh) a year, which will be about 300 million cylindrical cells. Samsung SDI
is known to have battery manufacturing capacity of about 80 million cells a
month.”
5 GWh of cell production would be big jump for Samsung SDI. Such amount of
batteries would be enough for more than 55,000 90 kWh packs (I-PACE size).

心得/说明：
简略的说一下重点，目前Jaguar I-Pace 用的是LG 提供的袋状电池
而从去年开始，LG、三星SDI 等多家电池厂商就一直在争取新的合约
根据韩国时报的报导，最后Jaguar 选择了三星SDI 提供的2170圆柱状电池
I-Pace 是在奥地利附近的生产线组装(预计年产1.3万辆)
至于三星SDI 的2170电池产线其实还没建好，预计会建在匈牙利工厂
一开始会有5GWh 的年产量，这大概可以给5.5万辆 I-Pace 用(I-Pace 电池组为90kWh)
讲到电动车产能问题，大家刻板印象都是Tesla 很糟，传统车厂下来做是分分钟超越
但其实传统车厂并没有那么利害，也是需要时间去提升产能
I-Pace 年产1.3万辆，是远远不及Model X 的5万多辆，更别说现在的Model 3
而I-Pace 在19、20年还要交2万辆车给Waymo
所以事实上全球一般买家两年内只有6000辆I-Pace 可以买
电池、电池组产能更是一个限制住车辆产能的问题
很难找的到品质稳定又能大量供货的电池厂商
最近发表的EQC 同样具有产能问题
EQC 将会在德国不莱梅、中国北京制造
不来梅产能如何还没查到
但在中国北京的年产只有1.5万辆

这是工厂建成之后的整体产能，初期产能还会更低
传统大车厂同样也是需要时间才能提高其电动车产能，不过不会有太多人在意也是事实
