CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.– Southeast Missouri added guard Oscar Kao to its 2018-19
roster Monday.
"Oscar is a tough, skilled guard who will be a benefit to our team
immediately," said Southeast head coach Rick Ray. "He can shoot the ball and
make plays for others because of his knowledge of how to manipulate ball
screens. Oscar has always dreamed of coming to the United States to play
college basketball and we are very happy and fortunate that he gets to
continue his dream here at SEMO."
Kao (6'0", 175) spent the 2017-18 season at Marshalltown Community College,
where he averaged 13 points a game as a freshman. He shot 44.3 percent from
the field and 39 percent from behind the 3-point line earning second-team
all-region honors.
"Oscar worked very hard on and off the court during his time at MCC," said
head coach Brynjar Brynjarsson. "It goes to show where hard work can get you.
SEMO is getting a great kid that will put forth the work, and have an impact
in winning."
A native of Taipei, Taiwan, Kao averaged 23.6 points, 4.2 assists and 3.8
steals per game at Songshan High School in 2016-17. He shot 49 percent
(103-of-210) from the field and 85 percent (65-of-76) at the free throw line,
as well.
Kao was part of two National Champion teams in the Taiwan High School
Basketball League and won National League Most Valuable Player honors twice
during his prep career. He also led the league in steals during the 2015-16
season.
Kao played with Chinese Taipei in the Fiba U18 Asia Championships, where he
earned first-team honors. He averaged 13.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and two
assists with the club. The experience afforded Kao the opportunity to play
against some of the best amateur competition in the world.
"Oscar is an eager learner and a true team player," added Songshan High
School Coach Roman Huang. "He never hesitates to do whatever is necessary to
help his team win. Oscar plays with supreme confidence and his unique
attitude is often contagious to the players around him."
