In August of that year, SK Wyverns of the KBO approached Kelly’s agent about ha
ving him come to Korea. At the time, the buyout for him to get out of the final
two years of Rays control was prohibitive, so the talks were tabled.

That winter, while he was in the Dominican Republic playing winter ball, Kelly g
ot a call from his agent. The Korean club was still interested and willing to ha
ndle the buyout if he would accept a smaller salary in the first year.

表示仍有意愿签他，但第一年薪资要比较少(因为要给光芒的买断金)
Kelly, then 26 years old, waited to see whether the Rays were going to add him t
o the 40-man roster or whether he would get selected in the Rule 5 Draft if they
didn’t. When neither happened, he went ahead and agreed to the deal with SK Wy
verns.
当时26岁的Kelly就等，看看光芒会不会把它放入40人名单
或是在规则五倍选走，但都没发生
所以他就去韩国了
“My original plan was to go over there for a year or two just to get out of my
[years of control] in Tampa,” Kelly said. “And then come home and even sign a
Minor League deal at the time. I didn't care, it was just like I'm going to get
out of Tampa because I clearly don't have an avenue to the big leagues there and
then see what I got.”

Each year there was a vesting option that Kelly easily hit. And when he was offe
red a two-year deal for 2017-18 that paid him $1.4 million that final year, he s
igned it.

Kelly had a big year in ‘17, making 32 starts with a 3.60 ERA, and his agent st
arted receiving calls from interested Major League teams. Kelly asked his KBO te
am to let him out of the final year of his deal, but the club had no interest in
losing its best pitcher.

“I was furious,” Kelly said.
