《The First Serve》

‘Disrespectful’ Victoria Azarenka slammed for abruptly quitting, storming of
f court
Andrew McMurtry from News.com.au
March 28th, 2022 12:13 pm
The tennis world was stunned after former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka storme
d out of her third round Miami Open clash against 16-year-old Czech star Linda
Fruhvirtova.
The Belarusian star was the 12th seed at the event but was never in the match.
The teenager opened up a 6-2 3-0 lead before Azarenka suddenly quit.
Azarenka shook her opponent’s hand and then the umpire’s hand despite her pr
otests.
“Vika we need to wait,” the umpire said, but the 32-year-old walked off the
court.
Fruhvirtova treated it like a normal change of ends but the umpire had no choi
ce but to call the result.
“I don’t know what happened at the end,” Fruhvirtova told AFP. “She was st
ruggling with some injuries. I don’t know but it was an honour to share the c
ourt with her.
“You never want to end the match this way but it happens. We shook hands and
then she walked off.”
It was not immediately clear why Azarenka retired but her head was not in the
game, shouting to her coach during the match: “Why am I here?”
The abrupt exit left a bad taste in the mouth of viewers. Former World No. 5 D
aniela Hantuchova teed off, calling for the WTA to look into the events.
“The most disrespectful thing about this is how she walked off the court with
out really giving a reason (for retiring),” Hantuchova said.
“I think the WTA will really have to look into this.
“This one for me is really bizarre and really disrespectful to the crowd, to
the umpire and most importantly to Linda (Fruhvirtova).
“I think Vika (Azarenka) just knows if she kept going this way she would be o
ff the court anyway very shortly.
“But just the way she’s done it, it’s not nice behaviour.”
Social media also blasted the star.
Sportskeeda editor Musab Abid wrote: “This is … not ideal from Victoria Azar
enka.”
Tennis Channel’s David Kane said: “The WTA is yet to respond to requests for
comment on the reason for Azarenka’s retirement, which would indicate to me
that there may not be one, as yet.”
The First Serve Tennis account added: “This is really disappointing from Azar
enka. Leaves the court out of nowhere, no explanation. She was being outplayed
by Fruhvirtova, and the young Czech deserved more respect and the right to wi
n that match on her own terms.”
UK actor Jaiden Michael tweeted: “#Azarenka is vile! Absolutely appalled by t
he attitude at the end.”
He added: “Azarenka behaving like a 16 year old. Muppet!” and “@vika7 you e
mbarrassed yourself today, lost a lot of respect. Please get help”.
The World No. 16 released a statement after the incident, which didn’t shed t
oo much more light on the reasons behind the retirement.
“I shouldn’t have gone on the court today. The last few weeks have been extr
emely stressful in my personal life,” Azarenka said.
“Last match took so much out of me, but I wanted to play in front of a great
audience as they helped me pull through my first match. I wanted to go out the
re and try but it was a mistake.
“I hope to take a break and be able to come back.
“I’m sorry to the fans for what happened as you were great to cheer for me.
It was the only
reason I decided to step on the court. I always look forward to the challenge
and pressure of
competition but to day it was too much. I have to and will learn from this.
“I would like to congratulate my opponent and wish her best of luck in this t
ournament and
beginning of her professional career.”
Azarenka, who is one of the Russian and Belarusian players currently not playi
ng under a flag due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, broke down in tears duri
ng her defeat to Elena Rybakina at Indian Wells earlier this month.
After the Indian Wells loss, she released a statement which read: “I am devas
tated by the actions that have taken place over the last several days – again
st – and in Ukraine. It’s heartbreaking to see how many innocent people have
been affected and continue to be affected by such violence.
“Since my early childhood I have always seen and experienced Ukrainian and Be
larusian people, as well as both nations, friendly and supportive of one anoth
er. It is hard to witness the violent separation that is currently taking plac
e instead of supporting and finding compassion for each other.”
