French tennis player Ugo Humbert has tested positive for COVID-19 just hours a
fter his first-round match at the Australian Open.
The No.22 seed suffered an upset loss to countryman Richard Gasquet, who preva
iled 3-6 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 in three hours and 18 minutes on Tuesday.
Humbert, who is now in quarantine, said he underwent a COVID test after the ma
tch as part of the process to fly out of Australia following his defeat.
The 23-year-old announced the diagnosis on Wednesday afternoon.
“I was tested positive on my exit test yesterday and I’ll stay one more week
in isolation in Australia,” Humbert wrote.
“Thanks for your support and see you soon.”
Humbert entered the Australian Open in mixed form, having lost seven straight
matches dating back to August last year before a shock win over world No.2 Dan
iil Medvedev at the ATP Cup earlier this month.
His positive test highlights the precarious nature of sporting competitions du
ring the current COVID outbreaks in Australia.
Gasquet is scheduled to play Botic Van De Zandschulp last on Court 7 on Wednes
day afternoon.
It is unclear if he will need to undergo additional testing prior to his secon
d-round match.
Gasquet himself tested positive for COVID upon arrival in Australia at the sta
rt of January, serving out his own seven-day quarantine period ahead of the gr
and slam.
Tennis Australia has been contacted for comment.
COVID numbers remain low
While Humbert’s diagnosis could spark fears of a cluster within the playing r
anks, masks are mandatory indoors in Victoria - including in shared spaces at
the grand slam.
Australian Open organisers reportedly planned to use tens of thousands of rapi
d tests on players and staff during the two-week event.
Lead-up tournaments in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide concluded without major
outbreaks.
Australia’s Bernard Tomic said he tested positive the day after losing a qual
ifying match in Melbourne last week.
