Novak Djokovic’s Ninth Australian Open 2021 Final Records the Lowest Rating E

The 2021 tennis season got off to a great start after the successful completio
n of the Australian Open 2021. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic emerged as the winne
r of the Grand Slam after defeating Daniil Medvedev in straight sets in the fi
nals. The final scoreline of the match was 7-5, 6-2, 6-2.
Although the stadiums saw huge crowds in the early matches, ratings reveal tha
t the Australian Open 2021 didn’t attract many viewers. The recent ratings ab
out the final are quite the same too and have also set a record that broadcast
ers will surely not like.
Even though it was a special time for Novak Djokovic because he won his 9th Au
stralian Open title, it was certainly not a great time for broadcasters. The f
inal attracted a metro audience of only 1.17 million, which is not a high numb
er for a Grand Slam final.
These ratings were the lowest for a night-time Grand Slam final ever. In addit
ion, they were also the lowest for a men’s final since 2003. This was quite s
hocking to the broadcasters, especially since Djoker was playing in the finale
.
TV ratings for the Australian Open 2021 drop by 30%
It wasn’t just the finals that didn’t attract viewers, but the Grand Slam on
the whole failed to grab attention. The official broadcaster Nine TV claimed
that there was a 30% drop in ratings as compared to the Australian Open 2020 t
hat took place in January last year.
The women’s final too attracted just 851,000 metro spectators, which is about
4.5% less than last year. Analysts highlighted that apart from the coronaviru
s pandemic. the absence of Roger Federer might have been another reason for lo
w ratings. Also, Australian players like Nick Kyrgios and Alex De Minaur didn
’t go far ahead in the tournament.
This is definitely a big setback for broadcasters, and they will want to analy
ze all possible scenarios and plan ways to shoot up their ratings at the Grand
Slam next year.
