She may not have won the match, but she still made history - during her first
round loss to Ana Ivanovic on Tuesday, Sabine Lisicki hit the fastest serve
of all time in women's tennis, blasting a 131mph serve against
the 2008 French Open champion and former World No.1.
The German fired the serve at 5-all, 40-30 - Ivanovic got her racquet on the
ball, so it wasn't an ace, but her return sailed wide, giving Lisicki the game.
Ivanovic would win the match, 7-6(2), 6-1.
Lisicki, who was already known for having one of the fastest serves on the
women's tour - and who was affectionately nicknamed 'Boom Boom Lisicki' by
ESPN's Brad Gilbert years ago because of it - is now the fastest-serving woman
of all time, surpassing Venus Williams' previous record of 129mph.
IDS, the company that tracks serve speeds at select WTA events throughout the
season, confirmed it.
