Dr Aziz:
Today we’re going to be talking about stress in humans.
We’ve recently looked at some of the causes of stress in humans and the vari-
ous health impacts stress can cause. Stress is the number one killer in the
world today, apart from epidemic illnesses and wars. What can people do to
reduce the impact of stress in their lives?
Thomas:
I agree that stress is a major problem, but there are any sources of
stress. One source of stress which is quite new is social media. I read that
the suicide rate amongst young women, for example, is increasing due to soc-
ial media. I think one way to reduce stress is to reduce the amount of time
people spend on social media. reading books and listening to music is one way
to reduce stress.
Laura:
While I agree with Thomas about the stress caused by social media, I
don’t think that just listening to music and reading books will help. I think
more important is exercise. We know from research that exercise is the best
way to reduce the effects of stress because exercise releases endorphins,
which are the chemicals the body produces during exercise. Doing exercise
also means that you can’t be checking your social media while swimming or
jogging or whatever form of exercise you do.
