Dear Mr. Zuckerberg -
A lot is happening in Mandarin language Facebook that English speakers probabl
y don’t know about. In America, there is great freedom of speech and politica
l opinion. But in my country of Taiwan, there is a serious crackdown on dissen
ting views. The head of Facebook, Greater China is Jayne Leung, who is a parti
san supporter of the ruling DPP party. The accounts of people who have been id
entified as critical of President Tsai are being closed, even for linking to a
neutral article that mentions her name. Facebook is becoming a political orga
n of the government, in an attempt to destroy all opposition. Facebook’s poli
cy of requiring photo ID and address of people who have been targeted as criti
cal of President Tsai is a chilling situation, considering the close relations
hip of Ms. Jayne Leung and the DPP party. Is Facebook a tool for repression? C
an autocratic regimes like these infiltrate high positions in Facebook, and us
e them to identify and track dissenters “in real life”? I think the answer i
s: it’s already happened.
Mr. Zuckerberg – you have built a tool that can be used for great good. Pleas
e defend our right to speak freely without being targeted by those who would u
se your platform to oppress.
Sincerely,
Tess Wu
